Written, produced and directed by Owen Carey Jones, A Mind of Her Own was made using equipment and support from the Immingham based Immage Studios and is a shining example of what can be achieved by independent film makers and local resources.
Shot in Hi Definition, the film 'A Mind of Her Own' tells the moving and inspiring story of a young woman's struggle to overcome dyslexia and achieve her dream of becoming a doctor, conducting ground breaking research into the treatment of spinal injury along the way.
The film, which had its UK theatrical release in March, has won several awards around the world, including a prestigious Crystal Heart Award from the Heartland Film Festival in America where it was chosen from more than 560 films to receive the award. The film also beat off competition from a BAFTA award winning film to win two further awards: Best Newcomer for Nicky Talacko and Best Supporting Actress for Amanda Rawnsley at the Monaco International Film Festival.
Following its festival success and theatrical release, 'A Mind of Her Own' was recently screened to BAFTA members in the Princess Anne Theatre at BAFTA's headquarters in London where Owen, a BAFTA member himself, introduced the film and answered questions following the screening.
Carey Films Ltd is part of East Coast Media's Kickstart business incubation programme whereby companies can use Immage's digital media equipment for free for a year while setting up their business. The joint venture, in association with Yorkshire Forward, gives ambitious and creative young talent an alternative to the big city production companies, and a chance to establish their reputation in the world of digital production.
Speaking about the film, Owen said: 'The HD equipment provided by East Coast Media helped us to produce a film with very high production values. I am delighted to be screening A Mind of Her Own in Grimsby as I feel the local community has a stake in the film and I look forward to being a part of this Meniscus event and to meeting people in the film making community of Grimsby.'
In a Whitgift Cinema first, the film will be screened using a HD (Hi Definition) format. Sean Atkinson explained; 'The film and TV industry is moving toward HD and many films are now shot on HD rather than 35mm film. A Mind of Her Own was filmed on HD resulting in a picture quality which is comparable to that produced by shooting on 35mm film. With HD, the number of dots that go to make up the digital picture is increased four-fold so there is much more detail recorded giving clearer and sharper images. The Whitgift Film Theatre has a new HD compliant projector and so we are going to take this opportunity to screen for the first time an HD film in HD!'
