The Meniscus Film Festival takes place once a year at the Whitgift Cinema in Grimsby, NE Lincolnshire. We screen a range of interesting, thought provoking and independent cinema as well as running a number of other events throughout the year.
The Meniscus Film Festival is organised by a group of dedicated volunteers (no one is paid!) Funding for the festival is sourced from the local authority, lottery and through private support, assistance and begging.
Meniscus mostly takes place at the Whitgift Film Theatre in Grimsby, Grimsby's premium independent cinema but has fringe events at various venues around the North East Lincolnshire region.
We hope that this website will allow you to get a feel for this festival and that it is organised by people who have a real interest in film. We are not out to make money and just want to show the films that we love in the hope that you will enjoy them as well.
We hope to see you at the festival and maybe see your film.
To promote film in all its forms
To develop new audiences
To set up and organise an annual film festival event.
Commission new work
To raise the profile of media production in North East Lincolnshire
Encourage wider community participation in film activities
We have seen a continual growth in the numbers of attendees and number of events. We have started to include more venues and show more films. An exit survey at last year's festival pointed to the demand for a local film festival. 100% of people answering the survey wanted to see the film festival continue. As the festival continues to grow we hope to be able to make it self-sustaining but need to get grant assistance to help us grow.
Grimsby has a very good media base in terms of both Media in education and support within the local community. North East Lincolnshire is uniquely placed with the provision of its own community TV station. Both community media involvement and media education facilities (East Coast Media) have increased and are continuing to increase in popularity. The interest in film is growing and is illustrated by the building of the new multiplex in Cleethorpes.
The film festival provides a platform for independent films and allows for the screening of lesser-known works. The festival exposes the audience to films and event that they would not usually get access to.
